The Erskine Ramsay Medal is presented to Syd S. Peng "for his accomplishments as an engineer, educator, researcher and consultant to the mining profession, with particular emphasis on the advancement of ground-control and longwall-mining theory and practice."Peng is the Charles T. Holland (Distinguished) Professor and chair of the Department of Mining Engineering, West Virginia University. Peng received his undergraduate diploma in mining engineering in Taiwan. He came to the United States in 1965 for advanced study and received his Ph. D. in mining engineering from Stanford University in 1970.
