Companhia Vale do Rio Doce (CVRD) commenced operations of a real-time rail management System on its Northern rail line in Brazil. The system monitors and dispatches more than 80 locomotives and 70 pieces of auxiliary track maintenance equipment. This is done on a 900-km (560-mile), single-track rail line between the Carajas Mining Complex and the Itaqui Port in Sao Luis. The real-time rail management system was developed by Modular Mining Systems of Tucson, AZ. It manages CVRD's pit-to-port rail system and tracks all rolling stock. The system also monitors all vital signs in real time and supervises all of the trains. And it supports simulation and planning, maintenance reporting, materials management and optimized train dispatching.
