In 1998, a small group of international mining executives met to discuss the need for the industry to improve its environmental and social performance. The result of those discussions is the Global Mining Initiative (GMI). Its goal is to rebuild public trust in the mining industry and to ensure economic viability to communities effected by mining operations. The GMI has scheduled a conference in Toronto, Ontario, May 12-15 to discuss these issues.
