In a lagging economy where profits are tight, businesses cut costs. No revelation there. The mining industry, though, has always looked for ways to reduce production costs - no matter the state of the economy or commodity prices. The fact is, when planning a new mine or the expansion of an existing one, mining companies gamble that commodity prices will be reasonably high when a project comes onstream. It takes millions of dollars and several years to bring a mine into operation. And a lot can happen economically between the time management gives the go-ahead for a new project and its completion. So mine planners spend hundreds of hours designing the latest technology into a new project or the modernization of an existing one. And the technology is there for them to use. Mining equipment keeps getting larger, smarter and easier to maintain. Software is available to improve ore reserve estimation, pit modeling, and surface and underground mining techniques. Crushing and grinding equipment has become larger and more efficient.
