摘要

Although the number of West Virginia residents directly employed in the coal industry is lower, the industry remains a vital part of the state's economy. Those directly employed in the industry contribute more than 1.1 billion dollars in annual payroll with an average annual wage of more than 46,000 dollars. Additionally, the indirect impact of the industry is estimated to add another 1.4 billion dollars in payroll in other economic sectors. The industry generates more than 4 billion dollars in output a year and spends an estimated 1.6 billion dollars in investment in property, equipment, materials and supplies. The coal industry is West Virginia's largest taxpayer, generating more than 300 million dollars in state and local taxes and fees. Coal will continue to play an essential role in the state's economy. The declines in employment have leveled off during this decade while coal production has remained at or near record levels. West Virginia has more than 45 Gt (50 billion st) of recoverable coal reserves.
