A ccording to Jay Corley, vintner and chair of the Napa County California planning commission from 1981-1985, 'The Homestake people knew that it made a heck of a lot more sense to get everything in line and do it right." Corley spoke about the process to obtain 327 permits for the McLaughlin Mine. This quotation from the oral history of the McLaughlin Mine was part of a tribute to Home-stake Mining at the Jan. 9, 2002 meeting of the San Francisco section of SME. The San Francisco Section and the national organization of SME presented Jack Thompson, former chair and CEO of Homestake, with plaques. They honored the contributions and support Homestake Mining gave to the industry, the local section and SME. Paul Scheidig, executive director of SME, presented a plaque from the SME national organization. It read, "In recognition and appreciation of Home-stake Mining Company for over a century of support and dedication to the science and technological principles embodied by the professionals and organization of SME. Presented by the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration, January 9,2002."
