Kids love rocks, yet seem to hate mining by the time they are in junior high. But now that there is so much first-class minerals education material available, there is no excuse for this. The Colorado Mining Exhibit Foundation is trying to do something about the situation. At the Taste of Colorado festival, held each Labor Day weekend in downtown Denver, the foundation erects its 12 X 12 m (40 X40 ft) exhibit, The Importance of Mining and Minerals. More than 400,000 people attend the festival. And last year's exit survey showed that more than 20,000 people-including 2,000 teachers-went through the exhibit tent. Everything inside the exhibit is free to the visitors. They can try their luck at gold panning, see the many educational videos and CDs and play computer games that teach mining and reclamation concepts. Visitors also take home free educational materials from organizations such as SME, Women in Mining, National Mining Association and the Minerals Information Institute.
