It was estimated that the US barite production during 2000 increased 38.25 percent to 600 kt (660,000 st) from 434 kt (478,000 st), according to the US Geological Survey (USGS). Barite consumption, sold or used by grinding plants, increased by 46 percent. Imports increased by 147.25 percent to 2.06 Mt (2.28 million st) from 836 kt (921,500 st).Most of the domestically mined barite was produced in Nevada, followed by Georgia and a small amount from Tennessee. It is estimated that 95 percent of the barite was produced for the well-drilling market as a weighting agent, primarily for oil and natrual gas. The remaining 5 percent was used in the nonoil-field markets, such a barium chemicals, glass, sound deadeners and plastics. The production from Georgia and Tennessee was used primarily in these markets.
