Brazil's Cia Vale do Rio Doce (CVRD) plans to make a bid for Exxon Mobil's Chilean copper operations. CVRD's stated goal is to become a world class copper producer, "one of the sector's largest."Earlier this year, Exxon Mobil announced plans to sell of its Chilean copper operations (ME, October 2001, page 12). These include the Disputada de las Condes mines and smelter.
