Editor: SME President R. V. Ramani invited comments on improving membership enrollment in SME (ME, May 1995, p.396). I am not much of a "joiner" and am not active in the affairs of SME. I admit this may disqualify me as a critic but not everyone aspires to be an official in all the organizations to which he or she belongs. On the other hand, I have been an SME member since arriving in the United States in 1963. If enrollment figures are disappointing, may I suggest one reason may be that the Society does not do enough for its members. Here are some examples. "When I worked in Canada, only mining engineers, regardless of experience, could write so-called "qualifying reports" (defending the sales of stock) "for the Ontario Securities Commission and the Toronto Stock Exchang. Geologists, including those of international repute, could not. In 1961 and 1962, Hans Frohberg, then president of the Geological Association Canada (GAC), approached the governing bodies of the two regulatory agencies and asked for the origins of its practices. Was it written in law, he asked, that only mining engineers could prepare qualifying reports? The answer was no, it was simply custom. Frohberg then persuaded the agencies to accept membership in GAC, plus five years of practical experience, as qualificatins for writing reports. (At the same time, the requirements for mining engineers was raised to include a minimum of five years of experience.) I already belonged to the GAC but if I had not, I would have applied the next day. When did SME do as much for some of its members?
