Emissions of the six major Clean Air Act pollutants have declined in the United States by 25 percent since 1970, according to the latest data from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The six pollutants include nitrogen oxide (NO_X), sulfur dioxide (SO_2), ground-level ozone, particulate matter (PM), carbon monoxide (CO) and lead. The EPA said that the reductions occurred simultaneously with a 161 percent increase in the gross domestic product, a 42 percent increase in energy consumption and a 149 percent increase in vehicle miles traveled.
