R. Larry Grayson is the chair of the Department of Mining Engineering at the University of Missouri-Rolla. From 1997-2000, he was associate director in the Office of Mine Safety and Health Research, National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health.Grayson received a B.A. in mathematics in 1974 from the California University of Pennsylvania. He worked in five underground coal mines in Pennsylvania as a union laborer, chainman, junior engineer, foreman trainee, production foreman, mine engineer and chief mining engineer. While working in the mines, he received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in mining engineering from West Virginia University (WVU). Grayson is certified as a mine examiner and mine foreman in Pennsylvania and is a registered professional engineer in Pennsylvania and Missouri. He received his Ph.D. in mining engineering from West Virginia University 1986. He was a research assistant professor, assistant professor, associate professor, dean of the College of Mineral and Energy Resources and professor of mining engineering at WVU. He was also a professor of mining engineering at the University of Missouri-Rolla from 1996-97.
