Despite the announcement that the Escondida copper mine in Chile would return to full production, Phelps Dodge officials said the company has no plans to restart idled capacity (See related story on page 11). J. Steven Whisler is Phelps Dodge's president and chief executive officer. He said several factors would have to align themselves with spot and future copper prices before the company would bring back curtailed capacity. Among them are trends in copper pricing, sustainability, copper inventory levels, copper's global supply and demand balance and the state of the world's economy. Copper stocks are declining some. Even so, Whisler said that they have not come down enough for Phelps Dodge to restart idled capacity. However, the company will produce more copper in 2004 that it did in 2003. Phelps Dodge's production next year is currently expected to reach 998 kt (2.2 billion lbs), about 32 t (70,000 lbs) more than in 2003. That increase will be due to higher ore grades and the company's increased ownership in New Mexico's Chino Mine.
