The SME Distinguished Member award was initiated in 1975. It honors those members who achieve distinction worthy of special recognition by SME. No more than four Distinguished Members may be elected each year, excluding the automatic election of the SME past president. Nominations must be made by December 1 of each year. The Distinguished Member Award Nominating Committee meets during the SME annual meeting to select up to four nominees, and the Executive Committee formally approves the awards. The names and biographies of the chosen Distinguished Members are published in Mining Engineering. The awards are presented at the following SME annual meeting. A nomination is active for three years.
