Only a small percentage of today's population recognizes that the mining industry continues to be a source of wealth and the foundation of our excellent lifestyle. Few people realize that, in Colorado alone, wealth is still created from gold and other commodities mined in the state - coal, molybdenum, aggregates, gypsum and a range of industrial minerals. Studies are also being done in the mining and processing of uranium and oil from oil shale. In December 2008, Mining Engineering summarized a survey of 4,513 readers. Respondents felt that the greatest challenges facing the mining industry are industry's lack of skilled professionals and skilled labor and the industry's poor image. The question is, how can this be corrected?
