China's imports of iron ore in 2006 are expected to continue to increase but at a slower pace than last year. The China Iron and Steel Association (CISA) said Chinese imports should reach about 300 kt (295,300 long tons) this year, a 10-percent increase from 2005. However, the increase is lower than the 32-percent increase in 2004 that brought the country's iron ore imports to 275 kt (270,600 long tons). "Iron ore reserves exceeds 60 Mt (59 million long tons) now," a CISA spokesman said, "far more than the normal level." That includes stocks at major ports, steel companies and mines. Iron ore imports to China during the first quarter were 80.9 Mt (79.6 million long tons), a 27.7-percent increase from the same period in 2005. Iron ore output from Chinese operations in 2006 are expected to reach 528 Mt (519.7 million long tons), up 10 percent from 2005, the CISA said. That includes output from small and medium mines. During the first quarter of 2006, Chinese iron ore mines produced 102.9 Mt (101.3 million long tons), a 32.8-percent increase.
