Cape Breton Development Corp. (CBDC), a Canadian-government company, operates two coal mines mines beneath the Atlantic Ocean. The company's Phalen and Prince mines extend 10 km (6 miles) out in the ocean and and are 1.000 m (3,300 ft) deep. Both mines are the primary source of domestic, metallurgical and thermal coal for Nova Scotia. Aboveground operations include a coal preparation plant, railway, shops, laboratory, warehouse and international shipping pier, About 2,300 people are employed at sites located within an area of 50 km (30 miles).
