It took FCC approximately four years and six months from the time that it acquired Phelps Dodge's 70 percent interest in the project until commencement of copper production. During this period, an agreement had to be entered into with the Piedras Verdes Ejido to enable the company to relocate the inhabitants of the old village to the new townsite approximately 6 km (3.7 miles) to the south. A reliable underground water supply was discovered and permitted approximately 6 km (3.7 miles) east of the mine. Surface rights required for openpit mining, processing and heap leaching operations had to be purchased or leased from the four Ejidos and private land owners in the area and an acceptable contract had to be negotiated for mining services.Many months of hard work by company employees and consultants were spent ensuring that the various federal, state and municipal permits were obtained before to the commencement of mining and construction activities. Once all of the permits were in place, the Piedras Verdes project and associated infrastructure were constructed and commissioned in 12 months at a capital cost of 100 million US dollars.
