Extraction of sand and gravel from an extension to Shawell Quarry, revision of the previously consented scheme of working and extension of the existing landfill operation into the extension site was permitted subject to 75 conditions in August by Leicestershire CC for Lafarge Aggregates Ltd. The planning application was accompanied by an Environmental Statement. It was proposed to extend the existing operations at Shawell Quarry into an area to the west of the quarry. The main issues were extension of an existing permitted mineral extraction and waste disposal operation into an area allocated for sand and gravel extraction in the Minerals Local Plan 1995. The application site also constituted one of a number of Preferred Options in the emerging Minerals and Waste Development Frameworks for sand and gravel extraction and waste management development. Shawell Quarry has been in operation since the late 1950s. The quarry and associated operations have been the subject of a periodic review of planning conditions under the Environment Act 1995.
