Proposals by RMC Aggregates Ltd to extend Norton Subcourse Quarry were approved by Norfolk CC in May. The proposal was for the extraction of 1.14 Mt of sand and gravel over a ten year period from 10.21 ha of land west of the existing quarry. It would be processed using the existing plant. The application site comprised two large arable fields and included the area of the existing processing plant and stockpiles together with the existing haul route. Most of the site was outside the Area of Important Landscape Quality which surrounds the site to the north-east and southwest. The Broads Authority Area boundary ran directly to the west of the site. Due to its proximity to these designated areas it was sensitive in landscape terms. The main issue was the potential for any detrimental effect on the setting of the Broads Authority area, which is subject to a high level of protection in the development plan. However, the scheme would not impact significantly on the wider landscape, including the Broads area, and the Broads Authority raised no objection. The proposed restoration was to a lower level with a small wetland area and planting.
