In December Derbyshire CC approved the continuation and operation of a waste transfer station for the crushing, screening and recycling of inert wastes involving increased volumes of wastes on land at Cotes Park Industrial Estate, Somercotes. This retrospective application made by JC Balls & Sons sought to import and recycle up to 100,000tpa of waste on the 0.83ha site. The site was close to the Pennytown Ponds, an established wildlife site and local nature reserve. The applicant gave an undertaking that subject to planning permission being granted, the company would make a financial contribution to the Pennytown Ponds project to provide a series of floating reed bed islands and would also provide suitable recycled materials. Operations commenced in 2000, recycling soils and demolition waste arising from the applicant's civil engineering business. The site had been operating at volumes of up to 70,000tpa for the previous 3 years, whereas the original permission had been on the basis of 16,000tpa.
