The UK minerals industry has already undertaken extensive work to reduce energy consumption, both within individual companies and through the Mineral Products Association (MPA), and significant progress has been made. Climate change has generally been considered on an overall or group basis, but PPS1 provides for a more site-specific approach to carbon management. The DCLG's December 2007 Planning and Climate Change supplement to PPS 1 states that the planning system needs to support reductions in carbon emissions set out in the Climate Change Act 2008, which aims to achieve a 60 per cent cut in UK greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.This means that planning authorities must take full account of the need to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and of the changes which could occur even if these are reduced.
