An application for the extraction of 130,000 tonnes of coal by surface mining on 30ha of land at Well Hill Farm, Stannington, Northumberland, has been approved after a debate over highway safety and the amenity impact on residential properties. The proposed development involved the extraction of coal over a period of 30 months and the progressive restoration of the site to agriculture and nature conservation.The site comprised 30ha of agricultural land lying 3.5km north-west of Stannington and 3km south-west of Morpeth. In considering the principle of the development, the council noted that the UK was dependant on coal imported from international markets and that indigenous coal would be more sustainable and secure.
