At present minerals is not high on the UN agenda but that is beginning to change. The MMSD report says: 'The mining and minerals industry faces some of the most difficult challenges of any industrial sector - and is currently distrusted by many of the people it deals with day to day. It has been failing to convince some of its constituents and stakeholders that it has the 'social licence to operate' in many parts of the world, based on the many expectations of its potential contributions ... A process of this nature has not been attempted on this scale before in any major industrial sector. It has not been an easy task, given the low levels of trust in the sector on the one hand and the complexity of the issues on the other". The danger is that the relatively benign UK minerals industry is going to get sucked in to the wider arguments about mining problems worldwide, and runs the risk of being exposed to inappropriate regulation flowing from the UN downwards. Progress towards sustainable minerals development should be maintained but it should recognise the special conditions in the mature economies and the advances already made towards sustainable development in the UK. The partnership approach, certainly between government and business, and including as many NGOs that want to be involved, is the most fruitful way to progress it. On a more positive note, it would appear that mineral professionals in this country, with 10 years of sustainable development experience behind them, may have a great deal to contribute to the global debate. MMSD will develop despite its critics. Watch this space.
