Recent plant supervision and control network designs are dominated by distributed configurations employing a network of small high-performance controllers. Networks for this application need to be capable of realtime response with sufficientbandwidth and support for video and audio data streams. The efficiency of the field networks handling remote I/O at the lowest level is being enhanced through distributed designs using intelligent remote I/O units. This report introduces leading-edgeasynchronous transfer mode (ATM)-based network technology for plant supervision and control, describing its application and work in progress on intelligent field equipment.
