Automotive exhaust emission regulations are growing stricter in parallel with demands for greater fuel economy. The exhaust-gas recirculation (EGR) valve is one technology used to reduce the emissions of automotive engines. The authors developedEGR valves in which an electronically controlled stepper motor replaces the conventional vacuum-driven mechanism. The stepper motor system offers more accurate control over a wider range of engine operating conditions than a vacuum system, reducingemissions and improving fuel economy.
