In July Staffordshire CC considered proposals by RMC Aggregates (Western) Ltd for development of existing sand and gravel extraction operations, and RMC ReadyPak Ltd for the construction of an aggregates bagging plant at Rugeley Quarry. A single environmental statement covered both planning applications. Discussions on the possible redevelopment of Rugeley Quarry have taken place since 1998 with public exhibitions in February 2000. The site occupies an elevated position (161m AOD) within the Cannock Chase AONB and Green Belt 1.5 km west of Rugeley. The majority of the proposed extensions to the quarry comprised coniferous woodland. The 95 ha site forms part of a larger landholding extending to about 300 ha. The current permitted working area covers 47 ha but no part of the quarry complex has been restored. The base of the mineral deposit is some 20m below the water table, but working has not breached the water table. To the south lies Bevin's Birches Quarry which is inactive, but contains unworked reserves of minerals.
