A Bayesian Approach to the Analysis of Soil Cover Structure

A Bayesian approach was applied to the analysis of soil cover structure in a field in the Bryansk Opolje. The hypothesis that local topology determines the placement of individual soil classes, which are characterized by a distinct spatial differentiation in the content of organic matter in an the undisturbed state, was tested. It was shown that the reclamation conducted on this field in the 1980s dislocated the soil cover so much that the soils with an undisturbed profile are only found as isolatedspots. Soil changes in space are weakly associated with common soil-forming factors. These results have been obtained using a Bayesian approach to the analysis of information and passing from deterministic maps (where the boundaries of all classificationunits are clearly marked) to probabilistic maps, which only indicate the probability of belonging to a particular classification unit.
