Stem damage in radiata pine: observations with respectto site, silviculture and seedlot

Radiata pine is the predominant plantation forestry species in New Zealand, planted across awide range sites in terms of environmental conditions. Through the development and testing ofa tree and branch growth model, TreeBLOSSIM, it became apparent that it was common forindividual trees in experimental trials to have the occasional larger than expected branch, whichappeared to result from incidences of stem breakage. As large branches impact on both stemwood properties and log use, it was important to gain a wider understanding of the incidence ofstem breakage within New Zealand. An examination of qualitative stem description codes re-corded in trials showed that the percentage of trees withstem breakage is highly variable and,depending on site conditions, silvicultural treatment and seedlot, can reach least 50%.
