Digital video tracking imagery of tree movements in responseto gusting airflow conditions

In order to trace the movements of trees over time and as they interact with gusting wind in acomplex terrain, illustrations are produced using a 3-D tracking program. The animation of spe-cific tree behavior will be based on digital information chosen from within field-gathered foot-age to show the paths of foliage, branch and tree movement. The biomechanical response ofleaves, branches, limbs, canopy, and/or trunk displacement can be captured, and a story told ofthe effects of gusting wind conditions upon a single tree, and further, over the forest and/oracross edge terrain. By choosing tracking points, as features, on trees from the entire framedlandscape, the response of an individual tree in the foreground can be seen within the context ofthe surrounding canopy. The trailing imagery can illustrate specific wind loading strategies andshow range of movement from crown to lower branches. Wind speed data are recorded in thefield during filming and are provided for each digitally annotated, video-captured event. Gustexcitation and sway response, as well as the characteristic movements of distinct elements, canbe individually expressed in this process using the vocabulary of art.
