The use and reliability of geochemical analysis as a tool to sedimentary geology investigations is demonstrated using elastic sediments of the continental Triassic of Argentina as an example. The results of geochemical analyses are compared to classic methods of sedimentary geology such as profiling, pebble analysis, modal and clay mineral analyses. Geochemical data of sediments require statistical treatment. Univariant statistics, correlation analysis, factor and discriminant analysis contribute to data interpretation in different ways. The depositional environment is considered to be the result of transport sorting and is shown in newly developed discriminant function diagrams. In the present study geochernical analyses result in reliable information concerning rock type, sediment source and plate tectonic setting of the provenance terranes and facies of the sediments studied. They proved to be a powerful tool which constantly met or even exceeded comparable results from classic methods of sediment investigation.
