Evolutionary biologists and systematists commonly make ontological claims about the existence, the delimitation and the temporal persistence of biological phenomena, under the assumption that these are either self-evident or supported by biological laws. This is, however, hardly ever the case. Biological individuals, as time-limited units have a widely different ontology from individuals as time-extended units. Because of the problematic status of "individual" and "organism" in evolutionary theory HENNIG'S semaphoront concept has to be modified.
