Neutron scattering at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory dates back to1945 when Ernest Wollan installed amodified x-ray diffractometer on abeam port of the original graphite reac-tor. Subsequently, Wollan and CliffordShull pioneered neutron diffractionand laid the foundation for an activeneutron scattering effort that continuedthrough the 1950s, using the OakRidge Research reactor after 1958,and, starting in 1966, the High FluxIsotope Reactor, or HFIR [1].
