A number of external factors are underpinning the aluminium price, which started the week with renewed strength. Nothing has really changed in the fundamental picture for aluminium, but if this rally triggers short-covering then prices may push higher in the short term. This suggests that the metal will stay there fora while. Interestingly, the fact that substantial volumes of warranted metal are locked in financial deals makes it not available for withdrawals. This generates short term pockets of tightness, which are already pushing up physical premiums. In our view, the eyes should be put in Chinese restarts, as if they gain momentum overthe coming weeks they have the potential of reverting any improvement achieved by aluminium producers through voluntary cutbacks.
