With the closing of arbitrage window between the SHFE and the LME, and the surge in aluminium production in China, the correction in the aluminium price is due. Regardless how virulent the recovery in global demand for aluminium eventually turns to be, it will be insufficient to absorb the excess of aluminium that the restart of idled and the commissioning of new smelter capacity in China will generate. The SRB has realized that their metal purchases are backfiring the local aluminium industry and benefitting foreign producers instead.
