Fungicides have played a big role in the control of plant diseases for more than 100 years. Occasionally a previously effective fungicide fails to control disease in a crop. There are many possible reasons for this, such as faulty sprayer calibration,rain washing the fungicide off, or operator error, but it may also be because the disease-causing fungus (pathogen) has become resistant to the fungicide. Fungicide resistance is due to a change in the pathogen, not to a change in the fungicide or in the host plant. The change in the pathogen - from being sensitive to a fungicide to being resistant - involves a genetic change that is passed on to successive generations of the fungus.
