The planned construction of a pipeline network to deliver CO2 to mature oilfields in central Alberta is intended to kick-start a CO2 -based enhanced oil recovery (EOR) industry in Alberta. While the oil industry response so far has been disappointing, some recent developments in the United States may offer reasons for optimism. When it comes to CO2 -based EOR, the big difference between Alberta and some parts of the United States is that Alberta hasn't had access to large low-cost sources of high-purity CO2. Historically, CO2 -based EOR in the United States was largely driven by sizable natural sources of CO2.
