With the growing shortage of faculty needed to teach students, faculty are developing innovative strategies to meet the needs of their students. With grant money, our school of nursing implemented a Clinical Nursing Institute for the purpose of increasing the number and quality of clinical teachers. The Clinical Nursing Institute provided an introduction to the theoretical and logistical components of the clinical educator role in the discipline of nursing. Practicing nurses, newly hired as clinical faculty members, learned and used strategies that promoted effective nursing student learning. The institute included a 7-hour introductory workshop, a 3-credit master's course, and a semester of mentored clinical instruction. Assignments included weekly online discussions related to the application of current clinical instruction research and the creation of a portfolio with samples of student evaluations, student assignments, postconference topics, and a self-analysis paper. The grant allowed the school to hire a faculty mentor who provided ongoing feedback during the semester in an effort to promote additional growth in the clinical instructor role.
