A number of years ago. I had a rare bamboo, Phyllostachys glauca yunzhu, for two years, and it grew no new shoots. I unpotted it and washed the roots and found no live buds on the short rhizome. I put it in a larger container so the lower branches were under the soil. The plant made tiny little rhizomes and then little shoots and it slowly recovered. We now have plenty of this bamboo from that small seemingly sterile plant.
