In this issue of Catheterization and Cardiovascular Interventions, Abdel-Wahab et al. report a retrospective, single-center registry of 205 patients with severe coronary calcification who underwent percutaneous transluminal rotational atherectomy (PTRA) before drug-eluting stent (DES) implantation [1]. The authors describe an initial success rate of 98%, target-vessel re-vascularization rate of 9.9%, and a relatively low rate of other long-term major adverse cardiac events. Similar to scores of observational and mechanistic studies of PTRA and other atheroablative devices [2], the current report concludes that PTRA is feasible, safe, and effective [1].
