If you associate the terms environmentally friendly and sustainable with images of lumpish, rammed earth houses, ugly solar panels and turf roofs then Julian and Raewyn Reynolds' two-year-old home at Parua Bay, on Whangarei Harbour in Northland, willmake you think again, it's modern, elegant and smart (in both senses of the word). And it has been built according to the best principles of sustainable design.Concrete was the material of choice - for both its passive solar heating properties and its longevity. "It costs a little more," says Julian, "but it lasts about 80 times as long and this place should still be here in another 400 years."
