摘要

In the spring of 1968 I first saw timber bamboo growing; it was in Lafayette, Louisiana in a nursery operated by Zoe and John Lynch. John Lynch was a biologist, instrumental in rescuing the whooping crane from the verge of extinction. Zoe Sagrera Lynch continues operating Orchid Gardens. These great people unselfishly helped to mentor my interest in horticulture, for which I am forever grateful. The shoots were coming up from the earthen floor of their greenhouses where exotic orchid species were growing. To an 18-year-old horticulture student the rate of growth was truly impressive. Mr. Lynch dug a rhizome with some of the previous season's growth in order to give me a start. Was I excited! and hurried home to plant the division. My start of Phyl-lostachys bambusoides showed little sign of progress until the following spring, when vigorous shoots began to emerge. My excitement soon diminished. Instead of leafy branches, the new growth produced flowers that to my eye resembled those of cereal crops. I remember reading that this species was flowering coincidentally in Asia, North America, and even in the southern hemisphere. The mystery of gregarious flowering intrigued me then, as it still does forty years later.
