Experimental models of coronary occlusion and reperfusion have been used to study the mechanisms responsible for myocardial infarctions; however, no one animal species has been found to be predictive for humans with respect to infarct size reduction strategies. Therefore, it is important to evaluate potential new therapies in several species. We have modified the ferret myocardial infarction model (1) to include an assessment of area at risk (AR), as is done in larger animal models of experimentally induced infarction (2-6). Assessment of AR and quantification of the infarcted area as a percentage of AR instead of left ventricular mass provides a more sensitive measure of changes in infarct size.
