摘要

Avian models were some of the first animal models of atherosclerosis to be studied. Four species have been used for the vast majority of these studies: chickens, turkeys, Japanese quail, and pigeons. These animal models have provided unique insights into specific aspects of atherosclerosis, including the role of genetic factors, viruses, hypertension, and estrogens in susceptibility to atherosclerosis, and have been used extensively to study cellular and molecular mechanisms in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis.
