It takes quite a unique product to be singled out for special attention at a major conference like SolidWorks World, as there's always the danger that it will overshadow the focus of the show. In this particular case, though, the hardware on display was a bit gobsmacking, and was used to highlight a couple of useful features in the next version of SolidWorks. The hardware in question was NextEngine, a desktop 3D scanner that sets new standards for both performance and price. It's a shame, though, that the only software that NextEngine is integrated with is SolidWorks. Well, it is if you are an Inventor, SolidEdge or Pro/E user at any rate! But I am sure that this will only be a short term problem, as a desktop laser scanner that comes with such stunning features and at such a ridiculously low price will force the latter group to demand equal access sooner rather than later Even if the company doesn't provide full integration, a la SolidWorks, scanned data will still be accessible using normal exporting facilities.
