Most contractors feel that the top overall challenge the industry has faced the past 25 years has been finding and retaining quality labor. "There is a lack of talent in our industry," explains Tom Fochtman, co-owner, CoCal Landscape, Denver, Colo. "It's not a coveted profession for educated people to pursue. There is talent that comes into the industry but not like most other industries. Our industry is considered more blue collar than white collar, and today's generation of college graduates do not aspire to work in a blue collar industry. They do not aspire to be contractors, and when I say contractor, I mean a builder, plumber, electrician or landscaper. It's not a very glamorous or sexy industry."
