摘要

As the European Commission publishes its new draft directive to harmonise Europe's diverse regulations on fortification of foods (see story on page 11 of this issue of New Nutrition Business), Finland is already altering its comparatively tight regulations in order to improve national nutrition. As the lack of selenium as a major concern in the Finnish diet has been deaft with, the spotlight is now on the issue of vrtamin D. Patricia Wiklund reports. Since the beginning of the year altered regulations have made possible the voluntary vitamin D enrichment of liquid milk products in Finland. Shortage of vitamin D is a common problem at the northern latitude of Finland, especially during the winter months when natural light is scarce. According to the National Nutrition Council many studies in Finland reveal that the dietary intake of Vitamin D is considerably lower than current recommendations, which currently are 5 micrograms/day for adults and 10 micrograms/day for groups such as children, pregnant and breastfeeding women and elderly persons.
