Novel research from the Institute of Molecular Engineering at the University of Chicago is looking to exploit the interaction of liquid crystal (LC) molecules with light for use in detection of neurodegenerative diseases. Similarly, to how other LC-based diagnostic systems have been used for virus and toxin detection – as reported in the previous issue – the new technique provides a simple and low cost method of detecting protein fibres linked to Alzheimer's and other such neurodegenerative diseases.
