Hydrogels have been hailed as the next important step in biomaterial fabrication. Unlike most other synthetic materials, they can provide an aqueous environment very similar to biological tissue. Unfortunately, hydrogels do not show the structural and mechanical properties that are necessary for a biomaterial.
