Herbage yield of four grasses in sodic soil under silvipastoral production system

The eastern Uttar Pradesh commonly called as 'Purvanchal' encompasses 25 districts of Indo-Gangetic Plain. The region abunds rich alluvium transported by river Ganges and its tributories, however, a sizeable area (167833 ha) is rendered unutilized due to sodic and other wasteland problems (Parihar and Rana, 1996). Sodic soil has usually high pH (9.5 to 10.5) with hard kankar pan within 1 m soil depth. Without proper amelioration such soil is not considered fit for agriculture and not put to any useexcept for grazing. There is an acute shortage of fodder in the region, if such lands are devoted to forage production, the problem of forage searcity can be mitigated. Better spatiotemporal use in silvipastoral system with forage as inter-crops has been documented by several workers in northern India (Deb Roy et, al. 1980; Harsh et. al., 1992; Singh and Roy, 1991). However, the information on sodic soil is meagre under rainfed condition. In view of this, the present study was designed to investigate comparative forage yield potential of four stress tolerant perennial grasses raised in association with Dalbergia sissoo (tree species) on sodic soil. In this study, D. sissoo is a leguminous nitrogen fixing tree species (NFT), with potential to improve soil fertility.
